LOOK THREE: THE TWINS

THE TWINS

Look Three consists of a pair of conjoined twins, joined together at the hip by a shared sculptural skirt, embelished with hundreds of yards of spiral-cut ivory silk flounces. The cascading layers create dramatic volume and fluid movement, allowing the skirt to ripple with every step. Each twin wears a tailored black velvet blazer featuring exaggerated shoulders and sharply pointed lapels, finished with an oversized white floral brooch handcrafted using the same techniques as the roses from Look One, creating a visual connection throughout the collection. Matching black fascinators with attached eyepatches crown each twin, while delicate butterflies appear to land across the headpieces, organically covering one eye before fluttering outward. Completing the look is a pair of custom platform heels, created in collaboration with shoemaker CB Worrell and crafted from soft grey nappa leather, bringing together couture tailoring, handcrafted embellishment, and collaborative craftsmanship into a single, cohesive character.

LOOK THREE — THE TWINS

Look Three, The Twins, explores the idea of duality through the image of a pair of conjoined sisters, forever connected yet existing as two distinct individuals. Inspired by the symbolic role of twins in folklore and Through the Looking-Glass, this look reflects the relationship between opposing identities that coexist within a single whole. Throughout mythology and fairytales, twins are often portrayed as extraordinary beings, connected through shared destinies, magical bonds, or contrasting personalities that act as mirrors to one another. Like Alice, who frequently imagines herself as two people and carries on conversations with herself, the twins represent an internal dialogue—the constant exchange between opposing thoughts, emotions, and identities.

This concept deeply resonates with my own relationship with my subconscious self. I often feel closely connected to the hidden parts of my mind—the dream world, imagination, and inner dialogue that exist alongside my waking self. The Twins represent this relationship between the conscious and subconscious, embodying the constant conversation between who we are and who we imagine ourselves to be. They symbolize the duality present within every person: fantasy and reality, softness and strength, light and darkness, logic and imagination.

The conjoined form transforms this psychological connection into a physical one, illustrating that while these opposing forces may appear separate, they are ultimately inseparable. The design was heavily inspired by mirror-image twins, where subtle differences reveal individuality within sameness. Small distinctions, such as being left- and right-handed or the direction one's hair naturally parts, demonstrate that even those who appear identical possess their own unique identities. Through the recurring presence of twins throughout fairytales and storytelling, this look examines the balance between connection and independence. The Twins celebrate the harmony between sameness and difference, creating a single silhouette that exists somewhere between one person and two.

The Conjoined Skirt

The conjoined skirt is draped over a custom-built conjoined crinoline, engineered entirely by hand. To create the foundation, two separate crinolines were carefully dismantled and reconstructed into a single shared structure. Long boning channels were sewn around the perimeter of each crinoline, allowing the forms to merge into one sculptural silhouette while maintaining two individual waistbands. This construction created the illusion of two bodies sharing a single garment, providing both the necessary support for the voluminous skirt and the freedom for each wearer to move comfortably.

Developing the conjoined silhouette required extensive experimentation. I explored several methods of physically joining the twins, including a version with a single shared waistband that completely connected their torsos. While conceptually interesting, the result felt overly theatrical and costume-like, limiting both movement and the elegance of the silhouette. Ultimately, I chose to retain two separate waistbands while allowing the skirt itself to unite the figures. This approach created a more refined, editorial appearance, preserving the illusion of connection without sacrificing sophistication or wearability.

The final construction emphasizes symmetry and balance. The twins appear to mirror one another almost perfectly, as though they are reflections created by folding a sheet of paper in half and opening it again. This mirrored relationship reinforces the look's exploration of duality, allowing the garment's construction to communicate the conceptual narrative as powerfully as the styling itself.
